Public Participation
Public participation is one of the core principles of the Water Framework Directive.
Irish legislation (Water Policy Regulations) requires the establishment by the local authorities in the Southeastern
River Basin District of a River Basin District Advisory Council (RBDAC) as a permanent forum for direct dialogue and
interaction between interested parties and the relevant public authorities. Its members are councillors, community
representatives and stakeholders. The Southeastern River Basin District also has an organised network of environmental
non-governmental organisations which promotes discussion of problems in the district between a wide range of stakeholders,
including the general public.
There are many ways of participating in the Water Framework Directive implementation process. As well as contacting
the Advisory Council or network member who represents your sector or local area you can attend public meetings,
participate in local interest groups or contact the SERBD Project. The process needs public support and input.
Local stakeholders often know local problems best and can suggest practical solutions. So go on - have your say!
